Public speaking – the mere words instill fear in most people. Yet, to land a job, let alone be valued as an effective leader once you land, solid communication skills are crucial.
How do you gain those skills? Toastmasters.org is one option. This international organization, with 13,500 clubs operating in over 100 countries, is dedicated to providing individuals with the training and practice to learn how to sound like a leader, ace an interview, and ignite their careers.
If you are a job hunter who wants to learn how speak better in public, come listen to Dave Chapman, an active member and past President of the Somerville Chapter of Toastmasters, who will be giving a presentation: “Crucial Communication and Leadership Skills for Job Seekers: An Introduction to the Toastmasters Resources,” on Monday, July 22nd at a PSGCNJ general meeting.
Chapman, a New Jersey native, has worked as a shoe shine boy, moving man, golf caddy, limo driver, truck driver, life insurance agent, stock broker, and an award-winning professional speaker. He teaches two classes at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Rutgers (OLLI-RU) and is currently a candidate for ordination as an Interfaith Minister.
He speaks professionally about the challenges of procrastination and provides personal coaching to people who have problems speaking in public. Chapman quips that he himself has been named to the Procrastinator’s of the World Hall of Fame, but claims, “they never got around to ordering my plaque.”
Excluding holidays, all PSGCNJ general meetings are held Mondays, from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the First United Methodist Church, located at 48 West High Street, in Somerville. Metered parking is available on West High Street.
All meetings are free, open to the public, and not affiliated with any religious group. R.S.V.P.s. are not necessary. Come, bring a friend, and learn how to speak powerfully, persuasively, and sail through your next interview.
